Rui Hachimura was introduced to basketball at the age of 13. His journey started in Toyama, Japan, where he would ultimately compete as one of the top players in the country while winning 3 national championships. As the first Japanese-born player to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft, Rui branded himself as the “Black Samurai,” an empowering celebration of culture, and a testament to the will of overcoming in the face of adversity.

An Ode to Toyama

An allover print on the sockliner pays tribute to the mountains of Toyama, where Hachimura grew up.

Fit For a Warrior

Shades of red, black and sesame are inspired by a popular anime miniseries.

Outsole Story

The outsole has circular traction inspired by the Air Jordan 1. The message molded into the rubber tells the story of Mike's backyard sports battles with older brother Larry. "45/2" nods to the number they both wore until they ended up on the same team. That's how MJ became #23, by splitting 45 in half, saying if he could be half as great as Larry, he'd be alright.
