As the survivor of a brain tumor that required surgery and more than 30 rounds of radiation, Sawyer knows all about bravery in the face of adversity. When Sawyer was sick, the kids and teachers from his elementary school wore a special green “Team Sawyer” shirt that featured his favorite animal, a panda bear. Now, a fun “Team Sawyer” logo hangtag and friendly panda munching on Nike’s Swoosh adorn his shoe.

Sawyer's Handstand

Before being diagnosed with cancer, Sawyer was training as a competitive gymnast. The silhouette of him in a handstand on the heel celebrates each clean brain scan he gets while the reflective details around the graphic mirror his contagious positivity.

The sociable Sawyer is all about giving thanks. On the tongue, you’ll find the names of his medical team, including Dr. Selden. “Dr. Selden is my hero,” Sawyer says. “He did such a good job on my surgery.”

The Doernbecher Freestyle program, a partnership between Nike and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, allows a group of special patients who have triumphed over serious illnesses to design authentic Nike gear. As a national leader in medical research and education, Doernbecher has been helping heal children and families in the Oregon and Washington area since 1926.
