Ethan can teach everyone a lot about perspective. You’d never know from his wicked sense of humor and upbeat attitude that he’s endured six open-heart surgeries and was born with a congenital heart defect. But that's just one of the stories this bright youngster has to share. His Nike Air Jordan 14 Retro is a tribute to the people and places that have been a part of his journey. The reptilian accents nod to his favorite team, the TCU Horned Frogs, while the number 6 represents all of his heart surgeries. “Honestly, I’m just happy,” Ethan says. “I’m also really thankful to be alive.” A lesson from the heart.

This athletic, mile-a-minute guy is passionate about basketball. His shoe is an Air Jordan after all. At the mere mention of them, he breaks into a wide smile and rubs his hands together with glee. “Oh man, I can’t believe I got to design Jordans!” And there are plenty of b-ball inspired motifs to go around, like Ethan's own personal logo and the colors from his favorite hoops team.

Ethan's shoe is a celebration of the places and teammates that have been a part of his journey. The laces feature the hospitals where he received care, while the tongue features the name of his pal and fellow patient, “Lil’ Rey.”

Doernbecher Freestyle Program

The Doernbecher Freestyle program, a partnership between Nike and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, allows a group of special patients who have triumphed over serious illnesses to design authentic Nike gear. As a national leader in medical research and education, Doernbecher has been helping heal children and families in the Oregon and Washington area since 1926.
